It is hard to believe that the Hardware Asylum Podcast has been in product for 14 years.  We started recording our monthly show in 2011, famously with Episode 2 since our first attempt was so bad it quickly became the burner.  However, the episode is technically live and if you know the URL you can listen to a forgotten bit of history.

Over the years there has been several upgrades, the PC we used to record the show was an ASUS Slate tablet computer and while a great bit of tech we needed something a little more powerful.  While a full desktop build would have been great, I wanted to make sure the computer was as small as possible with options to upgrade in the future.

The new machine will be based on the ASUS B660 Strix Mini ITX gaming motherboard with 32GB of Lexar Thor 6000MT/s memory and Noctua L9x65 Heatsink.  This heatsink many need to be upgraded eventually but, for now it will be just fine.  The final item is an upgrade to the capture card, and for that I went with the Elgato 4k Pro and will have to spend an additional $20 USD because Corsair figured it was better to not include a low profile bracket for a low profile card.

    CyberDeck Build

In this segment we talk about a new custom system build that Dennis has been planning that he is calling a “CyberDeck”.  Traditionally, a CyberDeck is just a small custom computer built in the flavor of the Cyberpunk genre.  These machines are typically small and customized to use found parts, or designed for a particular use.

The Hardware Asylum CyberDeck build will be mostly a test bed to support a variety of different SOC computers (like a Raspberry Pi) and remove the need for the endless clutter needed to fire one up.  There will be some custom bits added including a custom sound system, Serial to WiFi ability and a wide 10.4 inch capacitive touch screen and likely a custom mechanical keyboard.

Overall construction is still under discussion but will likely consist of 3d printed parts combined with some decorative acrylic panels.
