    Roccat Hiro Mousepad

So now that the Kone is out of the box and wired up, let's give it somewhere to sit.  I was impressed with the packaging of the Hiro as it came with not only a lot of detail and features of the mouse pad, but cutout samples of both the bottom base material, and the surface area as well to feel.  The Hiro is comprised of two separate bonded silicone layers.  The surface layer is vulcanized, giving it a hard-rubber feeling, while the base remains soft and grippy.

The entire pad is also resistant to liquids and staining, I splashed a couple drops of water onto the pad, and an hour later they were still beaded up on the surface.   Even dust and pet hair brush away with a blast from an air can or a rag, so keeping it contaminant free for laser mice should be a breeze.   This is really a best of both worlds mat, as it has many of the desirable traits of a solid mouse surface, while staying soft and flexible for easy roll-up and transport.

I haven't used a gaming pad with this type of surface before so initially I wasn't sure how the Kone would perform or sound on it.  Overall, I was pleasantly surprised using the Hiro, the Kone moved very easily and quietly over its surface, and the Hiro stayed put on the desk and didn't drift around.  Now the Hiro may not have a lot of flair, with just the Roccat emblem and the product name in their trademark lettering.  But for what it is, it works, and works very well, and the surface coating, along with the flat black color should work great no matter what sensor your mouse uses.
