Aorus Thunder K7 Mechanical Keyboard and Macro Keyboard Review

Currently the Thunder K7 is the only Aorus keyboard on the market so it’s nice to see they are thinking outside the box. And even nicer to see the price point doesn’t scare you away. Aorus has built the K7 with non-slip wear-resistant UV coated keycaps. This adds a textured Teflon coating to the keys to provide grip and extend the life of each key.
At the core, the Thunder K7 is a mini keyboard similar to the popular designs from Cooler Master. Here in the Asylum we tend to love these designs for their portability and smaller footprint on the test bench. The trick is to find the smaller size without sacrificing the build quality and is where a good mechanical keyboard fits the bill.
Aorus lays claim to this detachable design as the “World’s 1st Mechanical gaming keyboard with detachable Macro keys.” This detachable macro keyboard attaches to the sides of the K7 via a set of four leads and is held in place by magnets. The detachable wrist rest is also held on by magnets and is full length only.
The Thunder K7 has solid rubberized feet that give about a half inch of lift. In this picture you can also get a better look at the Macro keyboard connectors. The solid snap into place reminds me of Microsoft’s Surface power design.
A two meter cable provides connectivity and features a braded cotton cover and an 18K gold-plated connector. A Velcro cable tie is included for convenience. I prefer a detachable cable but don’t miss it in most setups.
By introducing a detachable macro keyboard, or ten key for some of us, Aorus has given us the best of both worlds. The macro keyboard can be attached to the left side where we commonly see programmable macro keys or in the traditional position on the right side. No extra cabling is needed.
Aorus refers to the setup configurations as Standard mode, Gaming mode, 80% Standalone mode and 20% Macro Gaming Mode.
