  • Computer History Museum Is "Thinking Big" with New Ada Lovelace Exhibit

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 10, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Computer History Museum (CHM), the world's leading institution exploring the history of computing and its ongoing impact on society, is honoring computer pioneer Ada Lovelace with a year of celebratory events, beginning with the launch of its newest exhibit, "Thinking Big: Ada, Countess of Lovelace."

Open to the public on December 12, the exhibit celebrates the 200th birthday of English mathematician and visionary Ada Lovelace. Lovelace, often referred to as one of the first computer programmers, is perhaps best known for her close partnership with Charles Babbage and her visionary ideas about computers.

Drawing on the Lovelace papers held at the University of Oxford's Bodleian Libraries, CHM's exhibit showcases high-resolution facsimiles of letters, journals, mathematical notes, and Lovelace's correspondence with some of the era's foremost thinkers, like Charles Babbage and Augustus De Morgan, a leading mathematician. Additionally, the exhibit features rich graphics and a multimedia component where visitors can hear readings of four select letters that spotlight moments in Lovelace's life.

This is the first time the Bodleian has publicly released its collection of Lovelace papers, and the Museum is the only location in the United States where you can explore its extraordinary contents. Many of the papers not only offer new insight into Lovelace's life, but also into the birth of computational thinking. Of special interest is a manuscript that contains the handwriting of both Lovelace and Babbage, evidence of their trusted partnership. This document shows the pair working closely together and exchanging ideas about mathematical problems.

"Ada Lovelace is often recognized for her partnership with Charles Babbage, but she was also a woman of fierce originality and intellectual interests," says Kirsten Tashev, VP of exhibitions and collections. "Lovelace she envisioned the future of computers as symbol manipulators as well as their far reaching creative possibilities. CHM's new exhibit uniquely explores both sides of Lovelace: the mathematician and the visionary."

CHM is kicking off the exhibit opening with a private VIP event featuring Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube – the world's most popular digital video platform used by a billion people across the globe. In the spirit of Ada and "thinking big" Wojcicki will join Museum CEO John Hollar in an intimate, one-on-one conversation about her career, the role of women in technology today, the importance of encouraging young girls to pursue STEM-related careers, the future of computing and her own thoughts about what it means to "think big."

Additional Lovelace-themed events and festivities will take place throughout the exhibit's opening weekend, including Adafest, a special community day where visitors can uncover the sights and styles of Victorian England and further explore Lovelace's life through storytelling, live demonstrations, and tours.

Major Funding for "Thinking Big: Ada, Countess of Lovelace" is provided by ACM and Google.org.

  • MSI GTX 980 Ti SEA HAWK Overclocked 4K Review @ [H]

4K seems to be what everyone wants to see and while the hardware is there to support the technology I don't see many gamers benefiting from making the switch.  Of course that doesn't mean it hasn't happened and HardOCP is making sure we know.

Our second installment with the MSI GTX 980 Ti SEA HAWK focuses in on gameplay at 4K and how viable it is with the fastest overclocked GTX 980 Ti we have seen yet. We will be using a reference GeForce GTX 980 Ti to show the full spectrum of the 980 Ti’s performance capabilities and emphasize the MSI GTX 980 Ti SEA HAWK’s value.

This would indicate that they have "another" review featuring the watercooled monster so, be sure to look up that review too.

On a related note.  In this review [H] is pushing this card up to 1441Mhz (boost) which is just shy of the stable OC I attained on the EVGA GTX 980 Ti Classified and also the typical limit of the GTX 980 Ti, at least in reference form.

Bottom line, you don't need watercooling to run 1400Mhz. happy smile

  • Asylum Review Block: Corsair Carbide 600Q

The interesting thing about running a hardware review site is not testing fancy new hardware or checking out the latest and greatest "whatever" but, watching a new product launch that you knew nothing about.

Don't get me wrong, what I do is great and I'd like to think the relationships I have made over the years are strong but I sometimes wonder if a new product launch that only goes to a handful of sites is really all that effective.

Of course as I say that I will admit I have gotten my fare share of "exclusives" such as the MSI X99A Godlike, and the HBT+ cases the Turbine and Shield.  Exclusive launches are awesome traffic magnets (assuming the links get shared) but a "handful" isn't that.

I dub thee review block "The case that launched and nobody cares"

    - Corsair Carbide 600C Inverse ATX PC Case Review @ Legit Reviews

Honestly I think it's pretty effin ugly too, but that is just my opinion, unbiased and honest.

  • Centage Customer and CFO of Loftness Specialized Equipment wins 2015 Technology Leadership Award by Ventana Research

NATICK, Mass., Dec. 9, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Centage Corporation, a leading provider of budgeting and forecasting software (Budget Maestro) for mid-market companies, today announced that customer Dave Davis, CFO at Loftness Specialized Equipment, has been named the 2015 CFO Leadership Award winner by Ventana Research. He was recognized for his success in spearheading a strategic IT initiative to automate his organization's spreadsheet-based budgeting and forecasting process. Davis helped increase efficiencies across his organization, saving valuable time and money, and solidifying the role of finance as a strategic contributor to the organization.

Davis realized that automating the budgeting and forecasting process was critical to create efficiencies among his lean finance team. With a history of relying on Excel spreadsheets to manage the budget, Davis had to make a change to more strategically support the objectives of his growing organization. He turned to Budget Maestro from Centage Corporation as a trusted and proven alternative. Now, Davis is empowered to concentrate on the structure and performance of the businesudget Maestrs and not get bogged down in troubleshooting spreadsheets or questioning the validity of the figures within the budget.

By automating an archaic spreadsheet-based process, Davis was able to streamline the development and delivery of the annual budget far more efficiently and effectively. Within minutes, he can easily create what-if scenarios to determine the financial impact of capital expenditures on the organization and confidently manage the largest expense of the organization – personnel. Armed with actionable, reliable, and up-to-date financial insight, accounting and finance have become essential to the management team. The finance team now plays a critical role in guiding and developing the company's strategic near-term and long-term initiatives while forging stronger partnerships with sales and product management.

"Since relying on Budget Maestro, we are in a better position to more strategically forecast for the future, execute efficient results analysis, proactively manage our financials, and raise cost-consciousness among the company's management team," said Davis. "Having relied on Budget Maestro at three previous organizations, I trust Centage as an invaluable partner to ensure the financial health of my organization. I am grateful for this honor from Ventana Research to underscore the power of Budget Maestro to support a more strategic, forward-thinking approach to financial management."

Budget Maestro, built specifically for mid-market companies, helps customers like Loftness manage critical financial data like a large organization. For decades, the standard software for budget planning was a basic spreadsheet. Lacking the flexibility, security, and collaboration essential to effective budget planning, spreadsheets drain resources and deliver incomplete, error-prone results. Budget Maestro is a sophisticated but easy-to-use budgeting, forecasting, and reporting software solution that scales to meet customers' needs. Without Budget Maestro in place, Davis and his team would continue to lack the strategic insight needed to most successfully manage the financial health of the organization.

"Congrats to Dave Davis, CFO at Loftness Specialized Equipment for winning the 2015 Ventana Research CFO Leadership Award for his leadership in finance through use of Centage for budgeting and planning," said Mark Smith, CEO & chief research officer at Ventana Research. "A focus on financial health and use of dedicated planning and budgeting software, instead of a myriad of spreadsheets, is critical to generating best possible outcomes."
